The industry outlook is very inspiring: composite reinforcement construction materials are on the great rise globally; for example, a market research by Global Market Insights forecasts a near 175% growth for FRP rebar alone in the period of less than ten years, namely 2015-2024. Actually we believe that the growth will be even bigger due to emergence of new technologies many of which are on the way already in one form another both in the industry and the company. This is pretty much everything that has to be known about the industry: it's growing and it's growing and growing again. This is the Big Picture.

FACTOR ONE

It is on the very surface and it can be called the Comfort Factor, and like any other comfort in any other area it is all about saving time and energy. Composite (also generally called FRP i.e. made of Fibre Reinforced Plastic) reinforcement is lighter than steel and therefore is easier and faster to deal with at all stages.

Stage one. Procurement.

A client in a DYI store puts a coil with 100 meters of 8 mm FRP rebar on his shoulder and carries it to the checkout with no sweat at all and then puts it in a trunk of his SUV.

Imagine him doing the same thing with 100 meters of 12 mm* steel rebar: twenty 5m-long rods weighing the total of 88 kilograms.

The same goes for any other end user in any area of application. Composite is always about ten times lighter than steel. These are mere words, when you hold it in hands you feel it. There has not been a single case where people who worked with steel all their life did not show sincere awe when they held FRP in hands for the first time. The awe normaly doubles when 'feeling the fibre' goes after description of mechanical parameters i.e. when they know what they are holding.

*IMPORTANT: In many applications smaller diameters of composite reinforcement successfully substitute bigger diameters of steel due to its parameters, so within these applications 8mm composite can be considered to be an equivalent of 12 mm steel.

Stage two. Transportation.

A. Smaller vehicles (trunk of an SUV insted of a truck, small truck insted of big truck etc etc)
B. Hence, smaller transportation costs*
C. Faster loading/unloading
D. Hence, less manhours
E. No crane at all or smaller crane instead of a bigger crane.
F. If we are talking about relatively big construction sites - faster and easier placement around
the site i.e., again - less manhours

*This one is very important. Cost-cutting on this front is directly proportionate to the size of the Client and his logistics; the bigger is the Client and his scopes the bigger is the cost-cutting. E.g. one 20ft container of FRP rebar has an equivalent of roughy 200 tons of steel rebar and the Client pays CIF for one container, not ten. Then it's one/two trucks instead of ten or more to deliver to wherever the product has to be delivered to from the port. Extract loading/unloading time/costs, extract costs of extra machinery like cranes (which is a-must with steel rebar) at all points of delivery , extract time and nerve cells wasted on bigger scope of work with steel - and then you have an idea what FRP brings on this front.


Stage three. Actual work.

Each composite product is easier and faster to work with than its heavier, clumsier steel predecessor. If it's rebar then you carry it around as if you are on the Moon with virtually no gravitation- it's that lightweight. You do not have to weld it. You cut it with a regular disc grinder if it's bigger diameters, three seconds per one very comfortable - I'd say meditative - cut, maximum. If it's smaller diameters then you can work with scissors or pliers. If it's reinforcement mesh, then, all the same - it's fast and easy at all stages of your construction processes. If it's pre-welded reinforcement sheets of bigger rod diameters then the speed of work compared to regular steel rebar increases about sevenfold and this is not a joke. With these an office manager can do a bigger job than a small team of professionals with regular steel rebar, tested.
CFACTOR TWO

This is the money world, and this factor is procurement price.

In Russia back in 2012 when the company was established FRP was not included in any of the construction regulations. It was sold on the construction markets to individuals and small construction firms who aimed at costcutting and costcutting only. Compared to steel, of course.

Cost-cutting at the procurement stage for this category of clients (and many others now) is ensured in the first place by the fact that smaller diameters of FRP can functionally replace bigger diameters of steel as it's been previously mentioned.

E.g.

One ton of 12 mm A-III/A400C steel rebar has 1126 meters in it

Each meter weighs 0.888 kg

A ton costs, say, USD 485

8 mm FRP substitutes 12 mm steel

One meter of 8 mm FRP is USD 0.243

1126 meters of 8 mm FRP is 273.618

Equivalent of one ton of 12 mm AC-400 steel rebar costs USD 273.618 and weighs 98 kilograms.

Magic.

This is why we sell by meters, not by tons. The Client looks for a particular number of meters to do the job, not tons. The Client is happy to get more lightweight, less troublesome, less costly material which does not corrode and does not damage the concrete so that his 'creation' can live for a much longer time.

Unless there are special requirements in projects where substitution does not work.

However..

In these projects other things work even better.

FRP has a number of technical parameters which make it better than steel.

In some aspects they make FRP unique and second to none.

Two most widely mentioned - and used - unique FRP parameters are resistance to corrosion (in the form of water, aggresive gases, alkali and various chemicals) and excellent electromagnetic conductivity. Some markets have it and some markets don't. For the former we can offer competitive price and in some cases - higher quality at a much better price; for the latter we offer a novelty - and you know better than us what a high-quality affordable novelty means; even more so - if we are talking about national or regional scale. A lot depends on logistics, of course - but, still, even if we deliver the mesh a few thousand kilometers the price will still be lower than that of steel mesh and all other qualites are still there, so there should be a lot of space for succesful marketing manouvers, especially in specific areas applications where steel simply doesn't work

What you see on the photo is brand new pre-welded foundation reinforcement. It's very lightweight and extremуly easy and fast to use: cut in necessary size with a regular disc grinder (3 seconds per one bar), fix in a few spots with wire or plastic clip - and that's it, done. Emerging markets might be generally less interested in this product as logistics makes it quite expensive and therefore - out of general demand; however, regardless of the type of the market there is always a segment of companies and their clients who want - and can afford - a better thing. Even more so - if you take into account that with the GFRP RS you can do a bigger, more quality job much faster, with less expensive logistics, less manpower and manhours to install (up to 700% increase in installation speed compared to steel reinforcement), no need to weld and.. yes, total end costs if compared to metal should still be lower.

Innovative yet traditional packing
In most countries rebar comes in rods only as they are considered to be less expensive to transport, especially if we are talking about trucks. We do rods alright; however, there are new ways - which in some cases are 'well-forgotten old ways' as a Russian wisdom says. What you see on the photo is rebar in 50m and 100 m coils which are much more comfortable for any end user whether its a big government project or a private greenhouse as they are compact, lightweight and are very comfortable to carry: you can quite easily put two 100m coils on your shoulders and carry them to your car from a DYI store or to your workspot on a 1km2 flooring at a major government construction site. Coils are tightly packed first on top of one another and then one inside another, just like the traditional Russian doll Matryoshka: coils with smaller diameter go inside bigger diameters. Custom-sized Matryoshkas are also used to rationalize free space in 20ft and 40ft containers as rebar in rods leave lots of free space. The same goes for storage: with Matryoshkas you will need 3X3m storage (1.35X1.35 for one Matryoshka and remaining space for access) to house an equivalent of a railroad container with steel rods. Hence
a. smaller storage purchase/rental costs and smaller bills plus there's b.smaller loading/unloading costs as coils require much less manpower and machinery like cranes to work with than steel and even less manpower than regular GFRP rods.

FRP products if compared to steel saves over 60% in total on procurement, delivery, installation and operations. Much less transportation, machinery and manpower: much less time, much less overall costs; faster construction, more orders, better reputation

Plastic rebar is even more easy and less costly to carry, ship and store now: when the diameter is less than 10 mm, bar is supplied in 100m coils which weigh 8-10 kg and are very compact (135cm in diameter, a dozen centimeters in height). These can be easily transported in a trunk of a sedan or in a minivan instead of a truck or just in a smaller truck if compared to longer rods. Same goes fro storage: less space, smaller bills, less hassle. Perfect both for end clients of DYI stores and major projects alike.

Its thermal-expansion coefficient is similar to that of concrete, so FRP does not destroy concrete at the change of temperature- unlike steel which gradually distorts concrete due to the difference of thermal longitudinal expansion coefficients when opearation tempertures change.
